About this Book

Lattice Boltzmann method is widely used to solve fluid mechanical problems in engineering applications. For the cardiovascular domain we extended this approach to support elastic walls as boundary conditions in order to simulate blood flow in elastic vessels. The flow is calculated in two and three spatial dimensions revealing characteristic flow patterns and geometrical changes of the arterial vessel walls for different time dependent input contours of pressure and flow. The results of these models are compared to the predictions of well established models, which are based on the work of Womersley and are widely used in blood flow simulation.

About the Author

Daniel Leitner graduated in mathematics at the Technical University of Vienna. He did his doctoral thesis about the simulation of blood flow using the Lattice Boltzmann method at the Austrian Research Centers. He is interested in continuous modelling and simulation, especially multiscale models, mesoscopic methods as well as homogenisation and averaging techniques. After his PhD studies he started working as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences in Vienna. His main duties are the development of new mathematical models describing plant and soil interaction. In the course of this project he is currently working at the Centre for Mathematical Biology in Oxford.
